The Essentials of Emergency Treatment

چکیده
to 850 hours of classroom teaching in 1930, the gradual inclusion of public health, psychiatric, and other affiliations in the course of study, and the reduction in hours of duty from eleven to eight per day show the changing concept of nursing education. One of the outstanding features of the book is its portrayal of the active leadership in nursing advancement which has been taken by the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing. We find its nurses playing leading roles in the Spanish American War and in World War I. Now again in World War II the Presbyterian Hospital Unit has been called into service. The author had a wealth of historical material upon which to draw: photographs; school, alumnae, and hospital reports and records; letters and diaries of former students. The many quotations are interesting and well selected. Probably in no other place is compiled the complete collection of information on nursing development during the last fifty years that is presented in the chronological list of events. The appendix includes an outline of the first curriculum and the complete diary of an early student nurse which clearly pictures the changed emphasis in nursing education. This volume will be a valuable addition to the historical collection of nursing literature. The book is attractively set up, being appropriately and uniquely lined with a reproduction of the material of the student nurse's uniform. There are 58 photographic illustrations. It is a very readable book and should be enjoyed by everyone interested in the development of nursing and especially by the large body of alumnae of the school. -JEAN BARRETT
